I would like a product that will not eat through any of the paint, dries fast, looks goo dand is permanent. brush on preferred/. can anyone recommend anything for me? tyWhat kind of clear coat is good for oil and acrylic?
Go with damar retouch varnish .What kind of clear coat is good for oil and acrylic?
Behrs brand polyurathane
If you'd consider it a fine work of art that you or someone else would want to keep for decades or longer then you need to use a picture varnish like damar. It's soluable, meaning after years of dust, dirt, and moisture damage the surface the varnish can be removed and reapplied. That way the varnish takes the damage instead of the painting.
If this is something you want to keep and protect now, or hold on to for a few years at most, then something like a clear polyurathane is fine. It dries harder and will actually protect the surface better but there's no removing it and revarnishing as the surface ages and gets scratched.
Polyurethane is the best coating to use for what you are talking about. I would make sure to get an acrylic base instead of an alkyd since the oil poly may eat into what you have painted.
Also, just as opinion, the high gloss polys can sometimes give things a ';plastic'; look, I would advise a satin finish.
As always, 2-3 thin coats should be applied for optimum finish.
