Can I use an enamel primer, urethane base, and enamel clear coat?

Can I use an enamel primer, urethane base, and enamel clear coat? Or would i need everything to be enamel acrylic or everything to be urethane? Im going to try to paint an motorcycle frame and maybe rims. thanksCan I use an enamel primer, urethane base, and enamel clear coat?
You could but you will get much better results sticking with one, preferably urethane. Your best off with an epoxy or urethane primer, either a urethane or polyester basecoat %26amp; a urethane 2k clear coat.

  • Painting over small fractures in the clear coat?

I want to paint my car and there is small 1/4 inch fractures all over the clear coat of the car.. is it safe to just sand with 400 over them and while they are still visible primer them and paint over them? or will they come back to haunt me in the futurePainting over small fractures in the clear coat?
Go hardcore, get some Aircaft Stripper and take it down to the metal, then prep it and do it correctly,

If you paint over cracking clearcoat that junk is gonna keep on cracking regaurdless of how much sanding you do,, unless you take it to the metal. Then prep, primer and paint properley.Painting over small fractures in the clear coat?
yea man i wouldnt worry bout it...just sand it and check the fractures thoughroughly to make sure they are not there anymore...if they are give it another light sanding and it should b good
I hate clear coat paints, they don't last like the old enamels. If it were me I'd strip it,primer, and buy enamel paint,at least 3 coats.
    check with the pros man

Refinishing my electric guitar, what type of final coat (clear) should I use?

I already sanded, primed, and painted a guitar my friend loaned to me, but wasn't sure what type of final coat I need to use. I used metallic blue paint as my paint, woodgrain is not visible.Refinishing my electric guitar, what type of final coat (clear) should I use?
Clear varnish like ';Man o War might work. Also, check with the paint salesman, I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.Refinishing my electric guitar, what type of final coat (clear) should I use?
Check and see what kind of paint the blue was. If it is acrylic or lacquer then the best thing to use is Duplicolor clear lacquer spray from an autoparts store. It is transparent so the color won't change and cures very hard. Here's how you do it:

    1) Allow the color coat to cure at least 7 days.

    2) LIGHTLY wipe guitar down with a tack rag (also available at an autoparts store).

    3) Spray the clear according to the can directions. You should use at least 2 BIG cans- allow about 15 minutes between coats, and continue with the coats until you use it all. Hang in a place where it won't be disturbed.

    4) Wait at least a week, then wet sand with 600 grit paper. Use a sanding block on the flat surfaces.

    5) Tack the guitar off again and apply one more can of clear, then wait at least another week.

    6) Wet sand as above with 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 grit sandpaper (don't skip grits!), then polish with rubbing compound THEN with polishing compound.

What is the best product to get out scratches in your car finish - scratch is in the clear coat?

The scratches are pretty noticeable and I have tried turtle was and nu finish scratch remover. What is the best product to get out scratches in your car finish - scratch is in the clear coat?
First some questions...Will your finger nail hang in it? If so, Probably need to have sanded out and painted. If not, Try rubbing compound from your local automotive paint jobber. It may require using a buffer...Try going to a local bodyshop, Most can tell you pretty quickly, But chose a reputable shop. Not a backyard butcher shop. Call an insurance company claim dept and ask for a reputable shop in your area. We do this for free as long as it does need painting, Customer service type deal.

Does buffing your car in order to remove swirl marks lessens the amount and quality of your clear coat?

Any kind of buffing or cutting polish removes top coat.

You also have to be very careful on sharp edges and corners were the paint is thinner than on a flat panel.

If you machine buff these corners you will be down to primer in no time.Does buffing your car in order to remove swirl marks lessens the amount and quality of your clear coat?
Yes, buffing does remove a very tiny bit of clear coat but doesn't really affect anything. Just don't overbuff and burn the paint.Does buffing your car in order to remove swirl marks lessens the amount and quality of your clear coat?
Buffing your car shouldnt lessen the quality of your top coat at all.. to get rid of the swirly marks i would cut n polish it first then buff it... will give it a nice over all finish.

What causes swirlmarks to get in a new clear coat paint job?

Using a blended fiber towel to dry the car off after a car wash, using a car wash with brushes, improper drying methods. What causes swirlmarks to get in a new clear coat paint job?
the car was most likely improperly buffed at the paint shop. uncured paints scratch easily and leave swirl marks. most shops only cover up scratches and not completely remove them. try contacting a 3m rep in your area and they can give you guidanceWhat causes swirlmarks to get in a new clear coat paint job?
dirt. either in the paint or on the cloth that you are polishing with. It can also be caused by using a buffer and digging it in too deep and burning the paint. A lot of swirl marks can be removed by using one of those erasers found at auto parts stores. good luck

  • Blonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?

I assume you mean you put a latex (water based) paint in the bathroom.

Don't worry, your fine. Do not seal it with Poly or you will create a maintenance problem,

As long as the latex paint does not get showered on with water constantly you are OK.

In the future I would recommend Latex....yes I said latex With 100% acrylic. It will dry fast, clean up easy and shed water beautifully.

Good luckBlonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
yeah but it may not work, and it may give you shiny walls (if you use enough of it).

but the bedroom paint should do fine, unless you splash ALOT in the tub.Blonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
i think that it will be ok..with that paint...i've done alot of painting in my life and i'v never used special paint for a bathroom and never had any trouble with it
The paint will be alright, I have the same paint in my bathroom as the bedroom and its fine even after 5 years.
Why don't you just buy the correct paint (high gloss or semi gloss) and just paint over it? For sure the correct paint will seal it and what paint is under it does not matter.
Best solution, if you like the color, get a quart or as needed of a semi-glass paint to cover the flat!
The better chose would be to repaint with semi- gloss or High- gloss paint. However semi- gloss is easier to paint over later without having to use a primer if you decide on a semi- gloss paint a few years later.
You will have to strip it and sand it. With all the moisture in the bathroom, it will grow mold and start cracking. Although the crack old look is a hit today.

What does that have to do with a blonde moment? Mistakes are made everyday; don't need to insult any one group for it.
definitely yes. do 2 coats for extra protection
Ask your local paint store, but I don't think thats a common practice... I wouldn't see how you would be able to paint over it without somehow sanding down all the walls!
The paint is not a problem. If it really bothers you, then buy a gloss or semi-gloss paint and repaint the bathroom.

I just painted my kitchen cabinets white can I put a clear coat of lacquer on them for a finish ?

or will it turn them yellow in time?I just painted my kitchen cabinets white can I put a clear coat of lacquer on them for a finish ?
Carolyn is correct. Lacquer shouldn't yellow the way oil-based poly does. If it' a latex paint you can spray water based clear poly over it also.I just painted my kitchen cabinets white can I put a clear coat of lacquer on them for a finish ?
yes you can use clear coat over your paint, make sure the coating is ok for the paint you used, ie water based paint needs a water based clear coat and oil based paint needs a oil based clear coat, and check the color of the clear coat itself it comes in tinted.

What is a safe way to get sap off my car without damaging the clear coat?

I bet WD-40 would work if you have can around..What is a safe way to get sap off my car without damaging the clear coat?
Try distilled vinegar and water. It always helped when I clean my car. If not try something from a auto store. Hope it helps. What is a safe way to get sap off my car without damaging the clear coat?
Bug and Tar remover. Apply fresh wax when done.
If its dried and hard on your car the surface might already be damaged... especially if in hot weather.

If your car is a late model try kerosene or if your careful laquer thinner will melt it right off.... but it will leave a dull mark which you can easily hand polish off with a clean cloth and a light cutting compound.

If its really bad you might need to clear the bulk of it off with a razor blade... no kidding! Put masking tape around the sharp corners of the blade and slice through the sap with the blade lying almost flat on the car.

What type of clear coat to use after I restore my BMW headlights and best way to apply it without problems?

The plastic covers are the worse. I am not aware of a sealant to prevent the return of the discoloration or ';fog';. You may need to use the cleaner and polish on a regular basis.

  • Cost of a Clear Coat on a new automobile?

What is going to be my best buy for an application of a clear coat on my new automobile. It is a 2009 Acura TSX. I'm searching for the best price aside from a dealer.Cost of a Clear Coat on a new automobile?
Since it's a new car, you won't have to worry about clear coat for a while. Just make sure you polish/wax your car every now and then to keep your car new.Cost of a Clear Coat on a new automobile?
Be sure you are not voided your exterior warranty by having someone else apply the clear coat besides the manufacturer of the car. I keep my cars for a very long time and have had cars with and without clear coat and clear coat maintains the paint much better.
?? does'nt the paint already have a clear coat on it
why would you want to do this???? it would cost more then you want to spend put it that way. I would say at least 1200

Is washing your car to often bad for the clear coat/paint?

if i hand wash my car 2-3 times a week is it bad for the clear coat/paint? is it not as bad if i only use water? Is washing your car to often bad for the clear coat/paint?
    yes

    everytime you touch your paint

you risk making swirl marks in it

and only using water makes it worse

since theres less lubricity so the dirt is more likely to scratch your paint

just wash it every 2 weeks..Is washing your car to often bad for the clear coat/paint?
as long as you have wax on the car and the water beads(dime size) then wash away, Never use a high pressure hose or pressure washer, It turns the dirt on your car into a sand blaster and etches the clear coat in turn dauling your finish.
Yes it will ,i have a uncle that washes his car just about everyday ,i'm not joking .Now he has places on his car where the clear coat is rubbed off.
I don't think so. My dad is IN LOVE with his 2009 BMW M5 and he gets it washed every 2-3 days. It still looks great. Although he does get it regularly waxed really good. That probaly has something to do with it?
2 or 3 weeks buddy wait like an month than but 3 weeks thats not good

your paint will geh off fast trust me happenend same thing to my friend he now does it every month its going well dont wreck your paint bro
wash when dirty once a month a lot sometimes three times a week waste of water and paint

wash it once wax it can just wipe it with a dust mop
Every time you wash your car, you remove a micro layer of clear-coat/paint. Food for thought.
It depends on the soap / cleaner you use and the hardness of the water used as well.......once per week should be enough

im just removing it from the top because its peelingHow can i remove clear coat from a car without damaging the paint?
You can't you need the clear coat to protect the paint..if it is peeling use a high quality wax and buffer and buff it out and it will remove the loose clearcoat and protect the paint under it. Or take it and have it detailed on the outsideHow can i remove clear coat from a car without damaging the paint?
Really you can't. The paint thy use under the clear coat is a cheep paint to say the least. What thy do is use a cheep paint and cover it up with clear coat and then polish the clear coat giving it that luster. After the clear coat peals you will see what kind of paint is under neath, crappy paint.
vinyl top, will look good and you won't have to worry about paint peeling

How to stop the clear coat?

My car is only a 99 and the clear coat on the passenger fender has bubbled up and peeled away in an area about five inches wide and three inches tall. This was about a month ago this happened. It rained two days ago and got cold and the next morning there was more flaking clear coat around the spot and now it's bigger! Plus, there are more tiny dime sized areas where the clear coat has bubbled. I have no idea if the weather caused this or what, but is there any way I can stop or slow down this problem? Anything would help. Thank you in advance! How to stop the clear coat?
Use rubbing compound %26amp; then lay on 2 coats of quality wax to stop it. And your whole car will shine like new.How to stop the clear coat?
you cant stop it from doing that, that's the one bad thing about clear coat paint jobs the clear will do this after about 10-12 years, the only thing you can do is have it repainted, that's about all you can do ,there's nothing that will slow it down or stop it once it starts coming off, good luck.

Can I wet sand lightly and reapply clear coat on my 2007 Lincoln Town Car door?

I think it would be easier than reapplying my base as well.

The door was scuffed by a truck tire and buffed out however I think I buffed off most of the clear trying to get the rubber off it. I do not need a perfect job. Is this likely to work ok? Thank youCan I wet sand lightly and reapply clear coat on my 2007 Lincoln Town Car door?
I know someone who has done it and it worked for them.

  • Iam staining my kit. cabinets how long do they need to dry B4 I can put on the clear coat?

I have noticed that even after they have dried over night they are still a little tacky. Is that ok or am I doing something wrong? How long should I wait before putting on the polyuethane finish( sorry if I misspelled it )Iam staining my kit. cabinets how long do they need to dry B4 I can put on the clear coat?
Try reading the directions on the back of the can of stain.Iam staining my kit. cabinets how long do they need to dry B4 I can put on the clear coat?
When you stain wood, you wipe the stain on and let it set for a few minutes to soak in. You then use a cloth to wipe off the excess and this should dry fully within 24 hours. If they're still tacky, you might have to use a cloth that's damp with mineral spirits to wipe off the excess. Then let it dry overnight before putting on the clear coat.
