I just bought a black upright bass but the paint isn't glossy. Would putting a clear coat on it in any way damage or make it not sound correct? I know that sounds strange but I want to be sure it's NOT going to change anything except the finish before I do it.Can I use a clear coat on my flat black upright bass?
It won't change the sound as long as it is applied in thin coats. Generally, all wood instruments have a clear coat of shellac or varnish, not a thick coat.
It won't change the sound if applied correctly by a professional. If oyu do it yourself, you need to sand the bass lightly with #600 fine sandpaper. Then clean it well and apply a very thing coat. Wait 20 minutes, apply a second and third coat. When you see that it is glossy enough, apply one final coat. Let dry 24 hours. Can I use a clear coat on my flat black upright bass?
DONT DO IT!!!! the chemicals in the polish will eat the wood away and you would have a broken bass! its okay if the paint isnt shiny. it gives it character :) but if you realy want it glossy, try using FiddleBrite instrument polish or something like that. i just dont want you to be upset when the clear nail polish eats your bass :';(
psycho-billy cats use Turtle Wax paste car wax. it takes a bit of rubbing and buffing but its the way to do it right.
