I want to add a protective clear coat finish to small wooden mod podges, what could be used?

Hey everyone!

My girlfriend and I are currently making little wooden jewelry mod podge style and have a dilemma! Because we are kind of new to finishings and what not, we are not exactly sure what to use. On the wooden jewelry is glitter and a some light paint.

What should we use to give the mod podge a shiny clear coating that feels smooth to the touch and wouldn't damage anything on the image?

Thanks for your help!!!I want to add a protective clear coat finish to small wooden mod podges, what could be used?
This depends on what kind of paint you are using. Water based or oil? You need to get a varnish that relates to your paint medium. You can put oil based varnishes over water, but not a water based vanish over oil. The oil cracks (that's how some crackle techniques are created by the way) but it is not very archival. If you are using a water based paint such as acrylic, you have the chose of both. Oil based will be stronger and more brilliant, but water based will be less toxic and quicker to dry. I would buy a little of both and try them each to see what you like the best, if you can. Just go to your local art supply store and ask them for a varnish of your choosing. If I was doing it and I had a good area with good ventilation I would go for oil based..really pretty. You could also while you were at it get some iridescent pigments to mix in with it and really have some fun. You can mix the pigment into either varnish. I hope this helps
