You could but you will get much better results sticking with one, preferably urethane. Your best off with an epoxy or urethane primer, either a urethane or polyester basecoat %26amp; a urethane 2k clear coat.

Painting over small fractures in the clear coat?
I want to paint my car and there is small 1/4 inch fractures all over the clear coat of the car.. is it safe to just sand with 400 over them and while they are still visible primer them and paint over them? or will they come back to haunt me in the futurePainting over small fractures in the clear coat?
Go hardcore, get some Aircaft Stripper and take it down to the metal, then prep it and do it correctly,
If you paint over cracking clearcoat that junk is gonna keep on cracking regaurdless of how much sanding you do,, unless you take it to the metal. Then prep, primer and paint properley.Painting over small fractures in the clear coat?
yea man i wouldnt worry bout it...just sand it and check the fractures thoughroughly to make sure they are not there anymore...if they are give it another light sanding and it should b good
I hate clear coat paints, they don't last like the old enamels. If it were me I'd strip it,primer, and buy enamel paint,at least 3 coats.
check with the pros man

Refinishing my electric guitar, what type of final coat (clear) should I use?
I already sanded, primed, and painted a guitar my friend loaned to me, but wasn't sure what type of final coat I need to use. I used metallic blue paint as my paint, woodgrain is not visible.Refinishing my electric guitar, what type of final coat (clear) should I use?
Clear varnish like ';Man o War might work. Also, check with the paint salesman, I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.Refinishing my electric guitar, what type of final coat (clear) should I use?
Check and see what kind of paint the blue was. If it is acrylic or lacquer then the best thing to use is Duplicolor clear lacquer spray from an autoparts store. It is transparent so the color won't change and cures very hard. Here's how you do it:
1) Allow the color coat to cure at least 7 days.
2) LIGHTLY wipe guitar down with a tack rag (also available at an autoparts store).
3) Spray the clear according to the can directions. You should use at least 2 BIG cans- allow about 15 minutes between coats, and continue with the coats until you use it all. Hang in a place where it won't be disturbed.
4) Wait at least a week, then wet sand with 600 grit paper. Use a sanding block on the flat surfaces.
5) Tack the guitar off again and apply one more can of clear, then wait at least another week.
6) Wet sand as above with 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 grit sandpaper (don't skip grits!), then polish with rubbing compound THEN with polishing compound.

What is the best product to get out scratches in your car finish - scratch is in the clear coat?
The scratches are pretty noticeable and I have tried turtle was and nu finish scratch remover. What is the best product to get out scratches in your car finish - scratch is in the clear coat?
First some questions...Will your finger nail hang in it? If so, Probably need to have sanded out and painted. If not, Try rubbing compound from your local automotive paint jobber. It may require using a buffer...Try going to a local bodyshop, Most can tell you pretty quickly, But chose a reputable shop. Not a backyard butcher shop. Call an insurance company claim dept and ask for a reputable shop in your area. We do this for free as long as it does need painting, Customer service type deal.

Does buffing your car in order to remove swirl marks lessens the amount and quality of your clear coat?
Any kind of buffing or cutting polish removes top coat.
You also have to be very careful on sharp edges and corners were the paint is thinner than on a flat panel.
If you machine buff these corners you will be down to primer in no time.Does buffing your car in order to remove swirl marks lessens the amount and quality of your clear coat?
Yes, buffing does remove a very tiny bit of clear coat but doesn't really affect anything. Just don't overbuff and burn the paint.Does buffing your car in order to remove swirl marks lessens the amount and quality of your clear coat?
Buffing your car shouldnt lessen the quality of your top coat at all.. to get rid of the swirly marks i would cut n polish it first then buff it... will give it a nice over all finish.

What causes swirlmarks to get in a new clear coat paint job?
Using a blended fiber towel to dry the car off after a car wash, using a car wash with brushes, improper drying methods. What causes swirlmarks to get in a new clear coat paint job?
the car was most likely improperly buffed at the paint shop. uncured paints scratch easily and leave swirl marks. most shops only cover up scratches and not completely remove them. try contacting a 3m rep in your area and they can give you guidanceWhat causes swirlmarks to get in a new clear coat paint job?
dirt. either in the paint or on the cloth that you are polishing with. It can also be caused by using a buffer and digging it in too deep and burning the paint. A lot of swirl marks can be removed by using one of those erasers found at auto parts stores. good luckmy myspace

Blonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
I assume you mean you put a latex (water based) paint in the bathroom.
Don't worry, your fine. Do not seal it with Poly or you will create a maintenance problem,
As long as the latex paint does not get showered on with water constantly you are OK.
In the future I would recommend Latex....yes I said latex With 100% acrylic. It will dry fast, clean up easy and shed water beautifully.
Good luckBlonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
yeah but it may not work, and it may give you shiny walls (if you use enough of it).
but the bedroom paint should do fine, unless you splash ALOT in the tub.Blonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
i think that it will be ok..with that paint...i've done alot of painting in my life and i'v never used special paint for a bathroom and never had any trouble with it
The paint will be alright, I have the same paint in my bathroom as the bedroom and its fine even after 5 years.
Why don't you just buy the correct paint (high gloss or semi gloss) and just paint over it? For sure the correct paint will seal it and what paint is under it does not matter.
Best solution, if you like the color, get a quart or as needed of a semi-glass paint to cover the flat!
The better chose would be to repaint with semi- gloss or High- gloss paint. However semi- gloss is easier to paint over later without having to use a primer if you decide on a semi- gloss paint a few years later.
You will have to strip it and sand it. With all the moisture in the bathroom, it will grow mold and start cracking. Although the crack old look is a hit today.
What does that have to do with a blonde moment? Mistakes are made everyday; don't need to insult any one group for it.
definitely yes. do 2 coats for extra protection
Ask your local paint store, but I don't think thats a common practice... I wouldn't see how you would be able to paint over it without somehow sanding down all the walls!
The paint is not a problem. If it really bothers you, then buy a gloss or semi-gloss paint and repaint the bathroom.

I just painted my kitchen cabinets white can I put a clear coat of lacquer on them for a finish ?
or will it turn them yellow in time?I just painted my kitchen cabinets white can I put a clear coat of lacquer on them for a finish ?
Carolyn is correct. Lacquer shouldn't yellow the way oil-based poly does. If it' a latex paint you can spray water based clear poly over it also.I just painted my kitchen cabinets white can I put a clear coat of lacquer on them for a finish ?
yes you can use clear coat over your paint, make sure the coating is ok for the paint you used, ie water based paint needs a water based clear coat and oil based paint needs a oil based clear coat, and check the color of the clear coat itself it comes in tinted.

What is a safe way to get sap off my car without damaging the clear coat?
I bet WD-40 would work if you have can around..What is a safe way to get sap off my car without damaging the clear coat?
Try distilled vinegar and water. It always helped when I clean my car. If not try something from a auto store. Hope it helps. What is a safe way to get sap off my car without damaging the clear coat?
Bug and Tar remover. Apply fresh wax when done.
If its dried and hard on your car the surface might already be damaged... especially if in hot weather.
If your car is a late model try kerosene or if your careful laquer thinner will melt it right off.... but it will leave a dull mark which you can easily hand polish off with a clean cloth and a light cutting compound.
If its really bad you might need to clear the bulk of it off with a razor blade... no kidding! Put masking tape around the sharp corners of the blade and slice through the sap with the blade lying almost flat on the car.

What type of clear coat to use after I restore my BMW headlights and best way to apply it without problems?
The plastic covers are the worse. I am not aware of a sealant to prevent the return of the discoloration or ';fog';. You may need to use the cleaner and polish on a regular basis.my myspace

What is going to be my best buy for an application of a clear coat on my new automobile. It is a 2009 Acura TSX. I'm searching for the best price aside from a dealer.Cost of a Clear Coat on a new automobile?
Since it's a new car, you won't have to worry about clear coat for a while. Just make sure you polish/wax your car every now and then to keep your car new.Cost of a Clear Coat on a new automobile?
Be sure you are not voided your exterior warranty by having someone else apply the clear coat besides the manufacturer of the car. I keep my cars for a very long time and have had cars with and without clear coat and clear coat maintains the paint much better.
?? does'nt the paint already have a clear coat on it
why would you want to do this???? it would cost more then you want to spend put it that way. I would say at least 1200

Is washing your car to often bad for the clear coat/paint?
if i hand wash my car 2-3 times a week is it bad for the clear coat/paint? is it not as bad if i only use water? Is washing your car to often bad for the clear coat/paint?
yes
everytime you touch your paint
you risk making swirl marks in it
and only using water makes it worse
since theres less lubricity so the dirt is more likely to scratch your paint
just wash it every 2 weeks..Is washing your car to often bad for the clear coat/paint?
as long as you have wax on the car and the water beads(dime size) then wash away, Never use a high pressure hose or pressure washer, It turns the dirt on your car into a sand blaster and etches the clear coat in turn dauling your finish.
Yes it will ,i have a uncle that washes his car just about everyday ,i'm not joking .Now he has places on his car where the clear coat is rubbed off.
I don't think so. My dad is IN LOVE with his 2009 BMW M5 and he gets it washed every 2-3 days. It still looks great. Although he does get it regularly waxed really good. That probaly has something to do with it?
2 or 3 weeks buddy wait like an month than but 3 weeks thats not good
your paint will geh off fast trust me happenend same thing to my friend he now does it every month its going well dont wreck your paint bro
wash when dirty once a month a lot sometimes three times a week waste of water and paint
wash it once wax it can just wipe it with a dust mop
Every time you wash your car, you remove a micro layer of clear-coat/paint. Food for thought.
It depends on the soap / cleaner you use and the hardness of the water used as well.......once per week should be enough

Really you can't. The paint thy use under the clear coat is a cheep paint to say the least. What thy do is use a cheep paint and cover it up with clear coat and then polish the clear coat giving it that luster. After the clear coat peals you will see what kind of paint is under neath, crappy paint.

How to stop the clear coat?
My car is only a 99 and the clear coat on the passenger fender has bubbled up and peeled away in an area about five inches wide and three inches tall. This was about a month ago this happened. It rained two days ago and got cold and the next morning there was more flaking clear coat around the spot and now it's bigger! Plus, there are more tiny dime sized areas where the clear coat has bubbled. I have no idea if the weather caused this or what, but is there any way I can stop or slow down this problem? Anything would help. Thank you in advance! How to stop the clear coat?
Use rubbing compound %26amp; then lay on 2 coats of quality wax to stop it. And your whole car will shine like new.How to stop the clear coat?
you cant stop it from doing that, that's the one bad thing about clear coat paint jobs the clear will do this after about 10-12 years, the only thing you can do is have it repainted, that's about all you can do ,there's nothing that will slow it down or stop it once it starts coming off, good luck.

Iam staining my kit. cabinets how long do they need to dry B4 I can put on the clear coat?
I have noticed that even after they have dried over night they are still a little tacky. Is that ok or am I doing something wrong? How long should I wait before putting on the polyuethane finish( sorry if I misspelled it )Iam staining my kit. cabinets how long do they need to dry B4 I can put on the clear coat?
Try reading the directions on the back of the can of stain.Iam staining my kit. cabinets how long do they need to dry B4 I can put on the clear coat?
When you stain wood, you wipe the stain on and let it set for a few minutes to soak in. You then use a cloth to wipe off the excess and this should dry fully within 24 hours. If they're still tacky, you might have to use a cloth that's damp with mineral spirits to wipe off the excess. Then let it dry overnight before putting on the clear coat.

I've painted the car part to my satisfaction, but I need help with a clear coat?
Do I just spray it on and be done? Should I use multiple coats? Is it possible to have too thick of a clear coat?
Does anybody know the name of that game where the red and blue robots puch eachother until the heads pop up?I've painted the car part to my satisfaction, but I need help with a clear coat?
I'm assuming your using spray paint. If you already sprayed your color you need to lightly scuff it with 600 grit sand paper and then clear over it unless you did the color coat less than 8 hours ago. In that case just clear over it.

if not, is there a way to prevent it from getting worse? i've been washing and waxing it regularly, but the clear coat continues to get worse. The clear coat on my car is starting to bubble and peel. is there any way to fix it short of a new paint job?
nope. The problem was that the surface had some dirt or grease or oil on it. Then it was painted over and now the paint did not adhere to the metal.
You have to go down to a good clean surface and repaint. good luck. The clear coat on my car is starting to bubble and peel. is there any way to fix it short of a new paint job?
Someone will have a miracle cure. But the truth is, there is nothing you can do. Don't wax the paint underneath the clearcoat, it might hold on to the wax and look chalky.
that's why you should wax your car every 6 months with a clear coat finish so that doesn't happen but there is nothing you can do but repaint
uh oh you better get maaco

You have to go down to a good clean surface and repaint. good luck. The clear coat on my car is starting to bubble and peel. is there any way to fix it short of a new paint job?
Someone will have a miracle cure. But the truth is, there is nothing you can do. Don't wax the paint underneath the clearcoat, it might hold on to the wax and look chalky.
that's why you should wax your car every 6 months with a clear coat finish so that doesn't happen but there is nothing you can do but repaint
uh oh you better get maaco

After sanding, priming, and painting a car, do I buff after or before applying clear-coat?
I have sanded a 1/18 scale die-cast car, I have primed it with 4 layers of primer, and spray painted it with 5 layers of paint.
Do I buff the car out to smoothen the surface after, or before applying clear-coat?
I want the surface to me smooth and shiny and to remove any rough spots; what would you recommend.
Thank you. After sanding, priming, and painting a car, do I buff after or before applying clear-coat?
wet sand it first...get a bottle of water and fine grit sand paper. and make sure it's wet and lightly wipe with the sand paper...then buff...then clear coat. and if u want u can buff after the clear coat just in case u get runs that are hard to seeAfter sanding, priming, and painting a car, do I buff after or before applying clear-coat?
Definitely before if using an electric buffer. The dealership put permanent swirl marks in our clear coat and had to repaint a brand new car because they didn't look at the owners manual, which said ';Do not use an electric buffer on any clear coat paint. Hand polish only';. Yes, it put us in a loner for awhile instead of the new car we just bought since they ';detailed'; it for us. But we all make mistakes. I just didn't want you to ruin your paint job, since we had already dealt with that problem. You have a lot of work in it.
That's a lot of primer and paint! Once you get clear coat on, sounds like it will be a sharp die cast. Good luck with your project.
lol you dont buff paint, I never heard of doing that. you buff the clear coat if you have orange peel.

Does your civic 2008 trunk interior have clear coat?
I bought the 2008 civic coupe, but i just realized that the interior or interior lining of the trunk does not have clear coat. I was even cleaning that area and it rubbed off some color off because it does not have a clear coat. Im not sure if it comes like that or they forgot to put it on. If someone have the same car as me, let me know if it's the same. thank you.Does your civic 2008 trunk interior have clear coat?
nope, your correct, they do not clear coat the interior of the trunk area or hood. Even the inside of the fender edges on 90% of new cars are not clear coated, thats why the color looks so different. When I repair cars, I always clear those areas if thats an area I repaired. I prefer the car to be shiny everywhere.
Only your top class cars will have everything painted with clear in the trunk area and under the hood. like caddies, jags and so on.my myspace

What is that pink-ish, goopy, clear coat they apply on top of a manicure?
After getting my nails done, they apply some pink-ish, goopy [sometimes], clear coat on top and it makes your nails look pink when you step out in the sun and your nails light up in the blacklight. I know it's a top coat, but what specifically because all the top coats I've looked for are just clear, not with a pink tint like the ones in the salons. What is that pink-ish, goopy, clear coat they apply on top of a manicure?

Can I paint a bicycle with just a clear coat?
So I'm repainting an old road bike, but after sanding off some of the paint I decided it would be cool to just sand all of it down to the metal and give it a few clear coats. But bike-painting ';how to';s always include a rust-proof primer. Are there clear primers? or would it be OK to just give it a few coats the clear paint/finish/lacquer?Can I paint a bicycle with just a clear coat?
Yes, you can do it, but will take a bit of prep.
If the frame is steel it will need to be sandblasted and the clear coat applied IMMEDIATELY. Be well advised that anyplace you touch the bike with bare hands, the print will show up on the frame. Also, steel frames will turn a medium grey finish- not stay shiny.
If the frame is aluminum, it will have to be walnut shell blasted. Again, the clear must be applied IMMEDIATELY without touching the frame. This will turn a greyish black eventually unless you take the time to polish the frame before applying.
Regardless of the material, note that you'll need at least 10 coats of clear, and that every single defect will show. Can I paint a bicycle with just a clear coat?
I never heard of a clear primer. Primers are used to cover up differences in the shade of the piece being painted, like bondo etc. You can try a clear coat, the worst that can happen is you have to do it over again.
You could probably just go with a clear coat but im not sure how well it will protect the bike... make sure the metal is really clean before you start and you should be fine just dont leave it in the rain

Spraying Base metallic and clear coat it looks wavy?
I sprayed a new fender with Dupont base metallic (Silver Birch Metallic) on a 2004 GMC Sierra I used Grey epoxy primer underneath and clear coat on top. it looks wavy like the metallic is not spreaded evenly how can I fix this problem the color looks right but it does not look very good? What is the trick to spraying the metallic and how can I fix this?Spraying Base metallic and clear coat it looks wavy?
I've done several metallic paint jobs at home. After I apply the first coat of base, I start looking for even application. It usually takes me more than one try to get it right. However since you applied the clear coat, the only way I know to fix it is to sand it off and start over again.Spraying Base metallic and clear coat it looks wavy?
After the clear has dries for a few days, hopefully in the sun, start by wet sanding thoroughly with 800 grit,Then spray out the silver base coat again. This time be sure it's thin enough to flow out without any texture or mottling. After it's been inspected for any uneven areas, spray the clearcoat. Use at least 10% reducer in it and spray at a relatively high pressure, moving fast and forcing it on to the surface in three coats, allowing it to tack between coats.

Could i use Clear Coat over stickers to prevent them from pealing?
I have alot of stickers. And was thinking of completely covering something in stickers. (a bicycle frame to be exact). Now to prevent the stickers from pealing over time, could i use many layers of clear coat to seal them on?Could i use Clear Coat over stickers to prevent them from pealing?
Clear coat doesn't really meant to prevent things from peeling. It's mostly used to prevent things from smudging or scratching. If you want to prevent your stickers from peeling I would say use clear tape or a large clear adhesive sheet of some sort.Could i use Clear Coat over stickers to prevent them from pealing?
i think so its called decoupage if i remember correctly.just make sure the clear coat is something that will stay on the material.
I do not think it would hurt, but I do not know. Putting a piece of tape over each sticker does help though.

Repairing the clear coat on a car?
I have a spot on my car where the clear coat appears to have come off. The paint is still intact and there is no rusting or scratches. My guy friends say that waxing the car will fix this. Is this correct?Repairing the clear coat on a car?
nope not at all actually, it might make it shiner for awhile because of the silicons in the wax but really every time you wax your car it takes a thin layer of paint off, that's how it gets shiny again, by removing dull dead paint.. to properly repair the clear coat you need to sand the panel down with at least 500 grit sand paper (remove all the shine or the new clear will just peal up) and re-clear the panel. if you want a good repair i wouldn't use a rattle can clear.. the repair will be noticeable and probably have adhesion problems.. Good Luck with your car!Repairing the clear coat on a car?
Wax wont make the paint come back, it may just look better. I would imagine the best way is to get some clear coat spray from an autopart store. I think they come in an aerosol can now. Then take a car buffer to it to smooth out the paint once it's dry.
no wax won't work i would buy low grit wet sand sanding paper like 320 grit wet sand by dipping paper in water keeping it wet sand down edges of clear coat of spot then you can buy a clear coat in spray bomb can coat spot were sanded maybe maskin out side of spot with masking tape and paper to limanate over spray
Steve was right until he got to the aerosol can thing - i paint cars for a living and no, you cannot wax the car to fix the problem,
your paint has 2 steps or layers, a base coat which is the color you see and a clear coat that protects the base and gives it a glossy look
automotive clear coats have a hardner or catylist in that paint that gives the paint strength - an aerosol can has none of that and will make the car look worse, plus most cans have lacquer in them which will react with the base coat and cause it to wrinkle
The only solution is to paint the panel , both with base coat and clear which will cost 600-700 per panel - or to just ignore it - the base will start to turn white and fade pretty rapidly without clear to protect it
waxing will do absolutely nothing but take the whitish fading away for a week or so - but without the clear the base will continue to fade and eventually rub off as it is applied very thin
sorry for he bad news - but at least you know

How to fix my paint (clear coat?)?
I've had my car out for awhile its black and has a good paint job except a small portion.
There are these spots where the (maybe its the clearcoat) looks like flat crystals on the top of the car and under the spoiler. It was waxed quite a while ago but for all I know it could be that coming off cause I haven't kept it up.
If I have these ';sunspots'; what can I safely use to remove the white color. I can't pay for a paint job.
It comes off somewhat if I scrape it but I don't want to scratch it. If it has to be dulled a little that's ok I just want it least noticable. And I need to sell this beauty. How to fix my paint (clear coat?)?
Wash, then buff or polish it with a heavier cut cleaner, then wax. Don't wax before polishing or you will just be undoing your work. How to fix my paint (clear coat?)?
wash wax then you may try a polishing compoud on a small area see if that works .other wise sell as is

Will a clear coat of paint stick to stickers?
I am trying to paint a couple of wakeboards to make one of those wakeboard benches you see in the stores. I am going to be buying used wakeboards so they are not that good looking. I was thinking I could paint them black, put stickers on them, and put a clear coat over that. I do not want to do all the work and then just have a messed up wakeboard bench. I want it to look good. Will a clear coat of paint stick to stickers?
The only concern I'd have is how shiny the stickers are. If they are really shiny try dulling the finish with very fine sand paper first. I'd experiment on an old board and stickers first. Will a clear coat of paint stick to stickers?

I spray painted a craft project with a clear coat and it crackeled!?
I use this spray all the time on these same things, but sometimes it crackles and bubbles up! WHY? I know the under coats were dry. I spray painted a craft project with a clear coat and it crackeled!?
Hi,
If you give more than one coat of clearcoat, do you wait the correct time between coats ? Usually 10 to 15 minutes.
There are several causes for cracking :
1 - you wait too little time between coats and the solvent doesn't evaporate. The top coat dries faster and gets harder. Then when the under coat dries, it forces the harder one to crack.
2 - you wait too much time ( lets say 1 hour; one day would be okay).
the second coat's solvent will attack the previous coat that is curing).
Solution : follow the instructions in terms of timing. Usually is 10/15 minutes between coats (thin ones). But better read instructions.
These are times for normal temperatures about 20 celcius (dunno F).
Kind regards,

How do i remove hard lines in my clear coat?
i used the 3m smooth transition tape when i was doing a spot repair for shooting clear coat. it still left thin lines ,maybe scuff marks how do i fix that problem? How do i remove hard lines in my clear coat?
Flaws of any type in clear coat are removed by water sanding with 1500 grit then polishing with rubbing compound.

A fine grade of buffing compound? Or you can start with a clearcoat cleaner wax. good luck.
Flaws of any type in clear coat are removed by water sanding with 1500 grit then polishing with rubbing compound.

Should I use the clear coat at the car wash?
out of all the options at the self car wash, i'm sure some of them are not really worth your time to use. The car wash company just wants you to make a couple more laps around your car and use more time.
So i'm thinking the clear coat might be the least useful for the extra cost of applying it.
Do you think/know if it actually does any good?
and if so, can i apply it after i soap, or do i have to rinse btwn applying it?Should I use the clear coat at the car wash?
You'd have to rinse and probably dry the car. If you were really interested in keeping your car in good shape, though, you'd wash by hand and put on a layer of turtlewax after you were done.Should I use the clear coat at the car wash?
Only if you want people to see your shirt under it

I need advice on clear coat lacquer prep please ?
I'm having vinyl graphics applied to my bike tank and the signwriter has advised that I should have it clear coated afterwards. Will I have to key the surface first, or will the clear coat take to the original paint ?
Also if I need to key the surface what should I use, and how much do I need to take off ?
How long will the graphics last if I don't bother ?I need advice on clear coat lacquer prep please ?
a scuff pad will workI need advice on clear coat lacquer prep please ?
it will need cleaned w/wax %26amp; grease remover and a good water based cleaner then water sanded with 1200 grit sandpaper before c/coat I would do this sanding before the decal is applied . check w/your local body shop before you do this to get ther opinion clearing over a decal needs to be done by a pro or you could cause lifting at the decal edge.

Will clear coat protect drum rim form rim shots?
i have a snare drum (an older Ludwig model) that i took apart and painted because i didnt like the colors that it had. I've noticed that if i do a rim shot or play something on the rim it will often chip the paint. Will clearcoat spray paint protect from this? if not what will? Will clear coat protect drum rim form rim shots?
Your rims are painted instead of chrome plated? Don't know if that would help but it could affect the sound which is not good.

Painting a car with enamel over clear coat?
My car has clear coat on it. I want to change the color, but I don't want to use paint that requires clear coat. Do I have to remove the clear coat before I paint it?Painting a car with enamel over clear coat?
I assume your using single pack auto enamel.
Good rub down with 400 wet should key the new paint.
35 years ago when I done my apprenticeship there was a saying that single pack enamel would ';stick like sh*t to a blanket';, and it was very true.Painting a car with enamel over clear coat?
No, it does not have to be removed. Just wet sand it with 400 grit if you plan to use a sealer, 500 grit if you will be painting right over the clear coat.
Clearcoat is an excellent sealer that resists solvent penetration, removing it will cause sand scratch swelling in your finish unless a sealer is used.
Listen to Schnauzer, clear coat is paint without color pigment, basically.
yes you will have to sand past it to get it t promote real good, other wise it will peel off,in a little while, you,ll need to prep the car pretty good, but all of the clear will have to be sanded off of it,in order for it to look good and stay on it ,good luck with it.
The easiest way would be to paint as is then apply another clear coat.
You may have a serious ';orange peel'; problem if you do that. Compound it down really good first.
No you do not need to remove the clearcoat just sand it nice and smooth with 400 grit sand paper

My paint is good butt the clear coat is peeling off my car.?
What would you suggest to fix. It is a 95 Town Car with Green Metal Flake paint. I am not looking for perfection, just a reasonable best way to fix.My paint is good butt the clear coat is peeling off my car.?
I'm sorry to tell you this, but the only way to fix that problem correctly is to have the car repainted. The clearcoat has to be removed and a new basecoat and clearcoat put on. I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself, unless you have experience in paint and bodywork. I've seen people try to wet sand the clearcoat off and salvage the paint, but it's impossible to do. It ends up costing them more to repair in the long run.My paint is good butt the clear coat is peeling off my car.?
Go to are car specialist who can paint vars and most likely they would have the clear coat your looking for or you could buy some at supercheap auto, repco or any other car hardware shop and buy some and apply it yoiur self
Nothing will save it except a complete repaint.

How do you tell if scraches are through the clear coat of a black car?
Yea. Just try to wax it off in a circular motion a couple of times with verry good wax composite. i recommend meguires. and if it is still there then its through the clear coat. sanding is probably your best option. My bus the clear coat is flaking off. its an older bus. What can i do to take this clear coat off.?
The easiest way is to use compressed air. Take the nozzle %26amp; put it close to where the clear is flaking and continue to spray air until the loose clear stops flying off. At that point you could sand the areas smooth and recoat w/clear. The best solution would be to to do that then use a sealer or epoxy primer to cover the entire vehicle, then repaint with a single stage acrylic polyurethane topcoat. Then you wouldn't need to worry about a clearcoat.

Can you use a clear coat resin or simmular over the top of vinyl tiling?
Looking to make a panel about 4x3 ft using vinyl tiles (18x18';) and was wondering if there was a way to coat the top so that it seems to make the panel seem like one piece and still show the texture. Also I think something like fiberglass resin would make it last a really long timeCan you use a clear coat resin or simmular over the top of vinyl tiling?
Certainly you can. You might be able to pull it off with polyurethane. Otherwise I would go to a lumber yard or try a tile supplier. You may need to call around using the yellow pages but I am sure there is someone out there who has the ticket for you.

Im gonna get my car painted, what will be the difference if i get a clear coat and if i dont get one?
Clear coat is more expensive but i dont want to get the cheaper one and not have it be shiny. is paint without clear coat still shiny?and what does clear coat do to the cars paint?Im gonna get my car painted, what will be the difference if i get a clear coat and if i dont get one?
the clear coat protects the paint and it is easier to fix scratches without having the car completly repainted. the extra money now will probably save you time and money in the long run. and it wont be as shiny without it.Im gonna get my car painted, what will be the difference if i get a clear coat and if i dont get one?
Clear coat is kind of a protectant for the paint.
If you've ever seen someone paint their car with a good, ol' fashioned rattle can, I assume your car would look like that without clear coat.
Not sure exactly how it would look, but I'm sure it would be undesirable.
Also, the clear coat will make the paint job last much, much longer.
By all means, go with the clear coat.
clear coat last a lot longer and looks better and is way more easier to take care of, i paint once in a while and id rather do a clear coat paint job as an acrylic enamel one any day,the clear coat stands up to the weather a whole lot better, and its easier to get it to shine,in some cases its cheaper to get one painted with clear coat than regular enamel, good luck.
Bottom line is you'll get what you pay for. Without clear coat you get enamel which is like a base coat with the clear already mixed in. The enamel usually looks almost as good. You'll just have to wax and buff more and it's got a shorter life span.
Clear-coating is supposed to prevent=fading %26amp; to protect fresh paint from the elements.
no shine and it will pretty much look like crap

How do I re-clear coat my car?
I have a 1993 Geo Prism and the clear coat is peeling off over large sections of the hood and some on the door. I was told my someone @ Kragen that I could sand the area and purchase ';spray paint cans'; of clear coat and try to do the job myself. I just need advice on how to go about it the best way, and if it is even something that is worth trying on my own. Thanks! How do I re-clear coat my car?
for a 93 prism I would trya nd do it myself. Just sand repaint and clear it. It will be a fun job. make sure you mask the areas you don't want paint on. You light even strokes. take your time. go for it.How do I re-clear coat my car?
If you fill the gas tank of a '93 Prism, you'll double it's trade value. I'd just say bye bye to a 14 year old car with a crappy paint job and get something newer.
Don't do it man! You get what you pay for. Sometimes you just have to bite that bullet and call in the experts. Don't even go to the ';cheapest'; shop in town. If it matters to you go on and do it right.
Is the car mechanically sound? Are you going to keep it? No buyer is going to buy it for looks/style etc. any ';buyer'; is going to wholesale it and it may end up as parts back overseas.... so weigh that into your decision as well..
tell the kragen guy u want to try it on his car first...
My husband is a certified paint and body man and I would not suggest doing that....you will be able to tell REALLY bad, if you dont use the right sand paper you will mess it up even worse. you really need a spray gun and an air compressor to do it right and I dont mean one you buy at walmart. the best thing you can do is to take it to a shop and have it done the RIGHT way. I dont mean Maaco either....they dont sand or anything. you can go the route of ';do it yourself'; but I would not suggest it! You may end up having a really big mess om your hands and a car that looks 10x worse!
Oh and to let you know...do not get your car painted with single stage paint either...it will pop off in a few years...honestly if I were you I would concider getting another car. those cars are not bad but we had a 95 prizm and after awhile it was just a giant pain in the as$. they are not worth ANY money and the parts are high...it may be a GM car but it is made by TOYOTA. that is why parts are expensive. I have a 95 Honda Accord I paid 1,500 for and I love my car...my parts are expensive too though. You dont have to spend alot of money to get a better looking and more reliable car! Good luck....but please dont paint your own car!

What can i use to clean and clear coat metal roof?
my metal roof is dirty and the snow dont slide as good, what can i do?What can i use to clean and clear coat metal roof?
You need to specify the material more clearly in order to get an accurate answer.
If you have a Kynar-finish, or similar roof, the best option is to power-wash it and leave it at that. Most paints and other coatings will not adhere well to Kynar finishes and will peel off over time. Most Kynar-type finishes are guaranteed for 20 years, or more depending on the substrate (steel or aluminum).
If it is an older painted metal roof, either galvanized or (very old) tin-plated, and still intact, your best bet is to again, power-wash it and then repaint it with a compatible paint. There are any number of metal roof paints designed for that purpose in any of several colors.
NOTES:
a) Older roofs may have residual lead-based paints on them - ';red-lead'; paint was very commonly used as a roofing paint through the 1970s - and why you see a lot of rusty-red colored roofs. If you power-wash a roof of this nature, a large amount of lead will be released into the ground where the roof drains. To the extent possible, put impervious drop-cloths at the drain areas to catch this material. If it does get into the ground remember that fruits and vegetables grown in that area may take up some of the lead - point being: get the paint tested for lead content if you think it is more than about 25 years old, or so.
b) There are any number of silicon sprays and clear roof coatings on the market, pretty much all of them temporary and pretty much all of them useless after the first winter. Don't waste your money. If your roof has the proper pitch and the metal was installed correctly, you have no worries anyway. Further to that, some of the ';slick'; sprays are fairly toxic.

Can I apply clear coat on top of epoxy paint on garage floor?
We purchase the epoxy kit but we did not mix A with B. My error. Now I want to protect my floor with some kind of a sealer or concrete protector so the paint wont peal off. My fear is would the sealer or clear coat can I apply on top of the paint. Recommendations please. I dont want to take the whole thing off and start all over again. ThanksCan I apply clear coat on top of epoxy paint on garage floor?
If you used just part A or B it will take forever, if ever dry. You sure can't put a sealer on it if the first coat isn't dry. Sorry, it's got to come off first. I suggest acetone. Have plenty of ventilation and a real big bunch of rags.

Can you paint over a clear coat?
So I am building a new bike and a friend who works at a paint and body shop did the painting and put a clear coat on the top. I was going to add some decorations of my own and wanted to know if it is possible to paint over a clear coat without removing the current paint job? If so, what type of paint would need to be used? Can you paint over a clear coat?
Hi,
Usually that is not advisable.
The common way when repainting a vehicle with a basecoat paint (paint plus clearcoat) is to sand the clearcoat, paint and apply the clearcoat again.
Anyway, you'll have to sand it so that you get a matt surface, otherwise you'll have adhesion problems. Start sanding with a microfine abrasive, like the 2600 or 2601 from 3M, or the scothc-brite 7448 (these are references used in Europe, don't know about USA).
It's also important to degrease before applying the paint.
After applying the paint, usually the clearcoat is applied after 10 to 20 minutes so that there's a bond. If one waits too long, there's an insuficient bond between paint and clearcoat.
But don't wait less than you should, otherwise the paint thinner won't evaporate.
Mind that the paint will have to be basecoat, and not direct glow. and compatible with the clearcoat that you'll aplly.
This is how things are usually done.
If you want to just apply some paint over the clearcoat, you c an do it, but it won't adhere well. Unless maybe if you use a glass paint.
If you have any doubt you may contact me.
Kind regards,

I have a mural on my building and would like to protect if from graffiti Can anyone suggest a clear coat ?
The mural is about 500 sq feet and was paint about 4 months ago. I have a feeling that one day Im going to come into work and see graffit all over the mural and ruin a lot of great work that has been done. Im hoping someone can help .I have a mural on my building and would like to protect if from graffiti Can anyone suggest a clear coat ?
if the artist have enough respect in the streets you shouldnt worry about that.
but if they disrespect other artist most likely they will retaliate by destroying one of their best pieces (your building for example)
i would suggest asking the artist for his art background, see if he has any beef or anything...
art is always best when it's in it's original form and you dont want to take anything away from the mural.I have a mural on my building and would like to protect if from graffiti Can anyone suggest a clear coat ?
I would say yacht varnish as this is very weather resistant. But the solvents in cellulose spray paint will eat into most varnishes. Maybe an acrylic varnish would resist. But you would have to test it first to see the result.

if the artist have enough respect in the streets you shouldnt worry about that.
but if they disrespect other artist most likely they will retaliate by destroying one of their best pieces (your building for example)

How to get rid of scratch on car!!! went through the clear coat?
I backed into a pole and I got most of the paint off the pole on my car with WD 40 and got my car polished. I also used scratch out but their are some white scratches and I think it is through the clear coat. How can I fix this!!! I am trying to sell my car and I am on a low budget! How to get rid of scratch on car!!! went through the clear coat?
buy a can of acrylic clear coat and some fine grit sandpaper
spray on as even as possible and wet sand untill you feel you've done the best you can doHow to get rid of scratch on car!!! went through the clear coat?
This really works....get a crayon close to the same color as your car (crayons are made of wax),';color'; the scratch and rub in with a cloth using a circular motion, repeat until scratch is gone. Cheap enough for ya?
i own a shop and i wouldn't worry about that part of it right now, because to totally remove all of it you would have to sand it down ,maybe paint that area and re-clear it,if its not that noticeable id save my money because a repair of that size could cost a few hundred to get done.especially with paint supplies going up just about everyday now,for now id see if it would sell without doing this, there's nothing you can do to it that will really help it any more than it is now, good luck selling it,hope this helps.
first off compound it with fine 3m glazing not rubbing compound but glazing, that will feather it out then buy a touch up bottle of paint and mix a little of it in the glazing compound and do that a few times do not over pressurize it take your time with it nd you'll see just Liuka new
Unfortunately, if its through the clear, there's nothing you can do about it.
well if they are small scratches I'd leave em alone but if they are big and nasty try getting some touch up paint from the parts store or dealer,Use some alcohol to clean the scratches, shake your paint up real good.It should come with a brush if it dosen't you can use the paper end of a match or tear the corner of a piece of newspaper and twist it a little,it makes a nice lil brush. Now dip the brush in the paint and dab it on the edge of the bottle to take off the excess paint and just dab it on the inside of the scratch and let it flow out and fill the scratch keep doing this slow and easy until you've repaired all the damage. If you get a lil crazy and the paint starts to drip out of the scrthc just wipe it up quickly with the edge of you finger and be more careful...good luck

Is it safe to use sandpaper on clear-coat (car) paint?
I've read that if you use rubbing compound and wax after, there will be no damage to the paint job.Is it safe to use sandpaper on clear-coat (car) paint?
Yes it is...only if you don't go any rougher than 1,000 grit wet-dry paper, and plan on doing some buffing. If your damage is bad you can go down to 600 grit wet-dry paper but be very gentle and pay attention to any color change. Don't be afraid to use plenty of water and always soak your paper. Is it safe to use sandpaper on clear-coat (car) paint?
You would have to use a wet 400-600 grit paper and not go so far as to remove the clear coat. What is the reason you need to do this?
you can use sandpaper but you MUST use like 1000 grit and plenty plenty of water.
depends on what kind of sand paper. you have to wet sand it

How do you fix a car's clear coat after removing pine tree sap?
My dad used oven cleaner on his car to remove pine tree sap that had dried on the surface like glue. Now he has dry splotches all over the car. I am assuming that the clear coat came off with the sap since the paint, itself, is still green--just dry looking. How do you fix the clear coat? Will wax actually make it look new again or does he have to take it to a body shop to get a new clear coat put on? thanksHow do you fix a car's clear coat after removing pine tree sap?

How to remove silicone wax/sealant from clear coat ?
Hello AlBdour... In the body shop before doing paint work we use a solvent called prep-sol.It's the same thing as charcoal lighter fluid.Just wet it down and scrub it with clean paper towels.I've found that Palmolive dish soap does a pretty good job, with some effort. Good luck,WildmannyHow to remove silicone wax/sealant from clear coat ?
Prep-sol can be found at any auto parts store that sells auto paint supplies. From the hardware store, charcoal lighter fluid[We use that quite often too].
How to remove silicone wax/sealant from clear coat ?
clay bar
PPG used to have a product called ';prep sol'; this should work ,,, follow instructions on container
Hit it with a large mallet.
McGuiar's Cleaner will work. Clay is much more involved and can lead to bad results unless you know exactly what you are doing. Follow up the cleaner with McGuiar's Polish, then McGuiars Yellow Wax #28. A machine tool will help greatly, but if you have to, you can do it by hand.
Try some Kleenz EZ from NAPA. It usually removes all bugs/wax/tar/etc. residue very well. Just be sure to reapply wax and polish afterward as your clearcoat will be completely exposed.

Should i use sharpie to touch up a guitar paint job before i clear coat?
there are a couple paint chips/sanded off spots, and i'd like to avoid buying more paint if i can. I'm using duplicolor autopaints.Should i use sharpie to touch up a guitar paint job before i clear coat?
Sharpies can be a luthier's best friend - especially for black finishes. Buy good quality permanent markers. Solid colors usually darken and you can apply several coats. These touch-ups are often very good alternatives to a refin that can cost more than the guitar is worth.

Can a sealant/clear coat be put over latex deck paint?
The floor wood of our deck is approx. 15 year old. The rails only 8. We just coated all with a latex deck color. All looks great except where the dogs walk. Is there any type of clear coating we can put over the traffic areas? It is a high sun area and we are in Kentucky. Can a sealant/clear coat be put over latex deck paint?
No, sealants are meant to go over either bare wood or stain. Paint is a poor choice in a high traffic area for this very reason. So is solid stain. You should have used a clear stain followed by the sealer.my myspace

Is there a clear coat spray paint made for plastic?
I used Restoleum crystal clear and it made it somewhat shinier but no like I want it. I'm painting the fairings on my motorcycle which are made of ABS plasticIs there a clear coat spray paint made for plastic?
If you want something that you can pick up off the shelf you can try going to napa or some other automotive store and get some automotive clear coat for plastic. Don't get anything for metal, it will ruin the plastic. You can also try color-rite.com they make paint/clear coat for motorcycle fairings that VERY closely matches the original, the only thing is that most if not all of their stuff works best if you use their paint. No matter what brand you use the clear coat has to bond with the paint and if they are different brands it won't look that shiny. Is there a clear coat spray paint made for plastic?
Go to a paint shop, many paints designed for metal will eat ABS. Is it molded in color or painted? If molded in, you will need put a primer to protect the plastic from the paint.
If you put a paint or coating on ABS that attacks the plastic, the surface will look rough/bumpy. You may be able to buff it all out (very slow speed so you don't melt the plastic), and start over.

How do you know if your car has a clear coat?
Hi,
I have a 1996 V6 Firebird and I am doing some touch-up work on the paint of the bumpers. I have used Dupli-Color and have found a perfect match for the paint but I need to know if it also needs a clear coat. Is there a definitive way to know if a car has a clear coat. I think it does, but am uncertain. How do you know if your car has a clear coat?
that one is clear coat, anything gm built after 88 all had clear coat on them, one way to find out is take a little bit of compound, and rub a spot on it,if you don't get color its clear coat,gm has been using clear coat longer than some of the other auto makers they was using it back in the early 80,s.yours will be clear coat on that car, good luck with it.How do you know if your car has a clear coat?
your welcome.
All modern cars have a clear coat. Your car has clear coat. For clear coat, you do not want to use anything that comes out of a spray can. the quality is so different from car clearcoat that it will not help to use it at all.
They all have clear coat these days and you don't even have to pay extra for it! Comes straight from the factory that way.
See Fargo.... lol
Your car has clear coat, but not your bumpers, you should find a touch up made FOR bumpers, it has a flex additive in it..
All cars have clear coat from factory, its in the painting process. However, it most cases (due to age of the car) it may be peeling and needs to be redone.

I need some pointers on putting a clear coat on my boat?
I have a fiberglass boat and im getting ready to put a clear coat on the bottom of it and i was wondering what the best way to prep the bottom of it without going through the existing paint while sanding is.I need some pointers on putting a clear coat on my boat?
Why are you putting a clear coat on Gel coat? And on the bottom??
You sand cautiously to avoid going through, that's all. You only have to form a key not get rid of it - if there is damage you fill that first.

Why is fresh clear coat cracking?
My husband is clearcoating over some airbrush painting he did on motorcycle parts. About a minute after he sprays the clearcoat, some spots are covered in cracks. He's soooo frustrated. Help! Why is fresh clear coat cracking?
Too much hardener. Wrong reducer (too fast drying), or thinner ratio, for the temperature. Force drying. Humidity issues. Mixing Enamel and Lacquer paint, especially if the undercoat hasn't thoroughly cured. Why is fresh clear coat cracking?
the temperature will cause that too happen, another thing that will cause it is moisture,if he didn't drain the air compressor it may be misting water with the clear coat, the only thing he can do is let t dry and re-sand it and try it again, temperature is really important when clear coating, good luck.

Painted scratches on vehicle do I need a clear coat?
I patched up some scratches and patches of paint, do I need a clear coat in order for there to be no rust or does it matter? The paint seems to match exactly with the car and I don't car about the shine because you cannot notice it on the vehicle, I just don't want rust formation.Painted scratches on vehicle do I need a clear coat?
if the scratches went through to the bare metal then there is some risk, just apply some 1 part surface primer to the bare metal and the color coat, it won't hold off rust for ever but a very long time, if the scratch didn't reach the metal then there is no risk of rust..Painted scratches on vehicle do I need a clear coat?
if you sanded the scratches out and used a good self etching primer than it does not mater what you put over it as long as the bare metal is covered it should last but the problem with not putting clear coat over it it will fade quicker and the uv light could break the paint down over time
rust is cause by oxygen that has reached metal
if you painted over it, there should be no oxygen going into the metal
so you should be fine
if your still worried
wax your car, which you should be doing anyways
makes your car looks 1000x better, and also prevents rust,
you don,t have to clear coat it again. clear coat is just so the paint will stay clear. i took the clear coat off the roof of my car and only used high gloss spray paint.my myspace

Can you put wax on a brand new clear coat paint job on a car?
To remove swirl marks. Can you put wax on a brand new clear coat paint job on a car?
its better to let it sit for a week or so ,to harden and dryCan you put wax on a brand new clear coat paint job on a car?
One best way to remove swril marks is with a high speed buffer. In order to use this you would need experience also you need something rather than just wax. I believe they make something to remove swril marks. 3M products will have it.Wax provides like a barrier between your cars body and the elements of mother nature.
yes just make sure that the new clearcoat is well dryed.

How much does a Clear Coat on my car cost ';approximately';?
Just so you know Country wax and polish will not fix chipping / peeling clear.
Have you owned it since new? not very common for factory clear to pleel and or chip. Sounds like a shody repair job. To just clear the car depends on the brand of paint used. the whole car just clear might be $600 to $1,000. Just so you know they are not going to just clear the car. They will paint and clear it. Cant just clear over old stuff as it will show any blemishes in curent finish etc.How much does a Clear Coat on my car cost ';approximately';?
How old is your car? The last 12 - 15 years clear coat is standard fare on new cars. You wouldn't accomplish anything paying someone to do it again.
Use the Mothers: #1. Pre-wax cleaner.
#2. Paint sealer.
#3. Pure Carnuba Paste Wax.
You will get a ';Drop Dead '; long ( 1 yr.) perfect wax job.

Can you use nail polish top coat on top of acrylic paint as a clear coat?
I did a custom paint job on my Tippmann 98 paintball gun which is made of metal. When I just did the lettering, I found that the acrylic 'tomato red' paint was pretty dull, so I was wondering if I could add nail polish top coat on it to make it shinier and preserve it? If not what should I use?
I want it to match the white gloss enamel that the body is sprayed with.
thanks! Can you use nail polish top coat on top of acrylic paint as a clear coat?
I think that would work and preserve the paint.

Usually water stains are white in colour as they contain calcium or magnesium. However, if you still think it's a water stain and you don't want to affect the antique too much, then a equal parts vinegar and water mixture applied with a soft cloth should gently remove the stain. Hope that helps!
I think if you rub turpentine on it that should do the trick. Of course, this is the hockey section so I may not know what I'm talking about when it comes to antiques

I have a BMW Black Saphire, I applied touch up paint and then the clear coat. How do I fix it?
It didnt really look good. I see a layer now. Now, after i put the touch up paint, it looked good somehow. But, when I applied the touch up coat which is transparent, it messed things up, Now I have a layer, and the color is ruined. Is there a way to fix that? Should I use sand paper? Any suggestions?I have a BMW Black Saphire, I applied touch up paint and then the clear coat. How do I fix it?
The problem is that your not very good at this DIY repair thing, so giving advice as to how to fix it seems a bit foolhardy.
However,(Without seeing it) from your description you should be able to rub it back and do the job properly. All is not lost. Take it to a paint and panel repair shop before you do more damage.

Where can I find a strong clear-coat sealer for glass jewelry?
I make and alter jewelry (pendants, backings, rings) and need a strong sealer/clearcoat to use after I've colored my (glass) pendants or rings. I've made it by using nail polish but it doesn't last long at all.
I also don't mind using products that aren't specifically made just for crafts.
Could someone help?Where can I find a strong clear-coat sealer for glass jewelry?
Use clearkote or clear varnish like they use on wood floors. That will definitely give you a rock solid surface and glossy as well.
Or use fingernail hardener which is also clear and gloosy.Where can I find a strong clear-coat sealer for glass jewelry?
Glass normally does not need a coating. Are you painting on the glass? I would think almost anything would wear off quickly when in constant contact and rubbing on the body. That is why glass is fused, so the object is all glass.

Should you fine wet and dry car paint after spraying metallic paint before clear coat?
People are giving me mixed info - some say ok to fine wet and dry the nibs off some say wait til clear coat is on then wet sand. Also can you use g3 compound before clear coat to flat back. How long should i wait for paint to dry before doing this process?Should you fine wet and dry car paint after spraying metallic paint before clear coat?
Do not spray clear over a sanded metallic base coat. For best results let the base coat dry enough to handle, water sand lightly with 800-1000 grit, carefully clean and tack, then apply a couple thin wet color coats. Then clear coat.I don't understand the question about compounding under clear before flat black. But clear is normally applied as soon as a base flash dries to insure adhesion.Should you fine wet and dry car paint after spraying metallic paint before clear coat?
The best result ,is to prep your car undercoat , all smooth no dents approx 350 to 420, wet and dry, then complete the whole car, with colour two to three coats, then follow approx 30 to 40 minutes, with two to three coats clear coats ,this alloys the clear coat to adhere to the base colour and your paint finish will last for years and not fade, car should be completted in approx 2 hours painting then after approx 48 hours, wet sand with 1000 to 1200 untill smooth ,then lightly with 1500, then polish to finish,
You can wet/dry up to the metallic base coat let base coat dry then spray on clear coat,do not touch the base coat as any marks will show under the clear coat, hope this helps, good luck.
DO NOT SAND BASECOAT!!!!!!!!
It will screw up the metallic in it.

Can anyone recommend a suitable clear coat for a gun stock?
I'm refinishing an old 16 gauge single shot and want to make sure that I seal the wood properly. Can anyone recommend a suitable clear coat for a gun stock?
I know of a completely fool proof gunstock finish. It actually dries quickly and completely, dries completely clear, dries hard and sandable, and can be used in multiple coats. Although it dries to a fine gloss, it can be ';matted'; with extra fine steel wool, then cotton polished to a semigloss finish if desired!
What is this magic stuff? it's called DEFT brand gloss clear wood finish. NOT DEFT POLYURETHANE! You want the CLEAR WOOD FINISH! It will outperform ANY polyurethane product regardless of brand.
It's the greatest stuff I've EVER used, and I've used a LOT of stuff!. This stuff will even dry poly finishes and stains that failed to completely dry themselves! It will even dry on oil-soaked wood! If you spray it in light dusting coats from 30';-36'; away, you can even make a modern ';pebbled'; finish!
Your local hardware or paint supplier can order this spray for 5$-6$ a can. A can will easily do a gun.
I am a professional artist, and I even use this finish to quick-dry OIL PAINTS that might take a week or more to dry on their own. I've used it on fine-art paintings for 20 years with no disappointments there, either!
This is THE BEST CLEAR FINISH AVALIBLE.
Use it once and swear by it FOREVER.Can anyone recommend a suitable clear coat for a gun stock?
I have done a couple of old shotguns and used a semi-gloss polyurethane. One shotgun had a nice dark hardwood and needed to stain. The other was a less expensive pump and the forearm was a different wood than the stock. Bought it in a pawn shop for $35. It was a nice little 20ga Stevens pump. All beat up and rusty. I used a stain poly on it bring the forearm up to the right color of the stock, cleaned and cold blued the metal, removed all the bluing from the aluminum receiver and sand blasted the top for a flat finish. It came out beautiful for about $12 worth of material. Has made a great rabbit, squirrel, quail gun.
My favorete finishes for a gunstock are Linspeed gun stock finsh and Truoil gun stock finish. Both are excellent but take time and patience to do the job right. It is about the easiest finsh to apply but takes several coats applied about one coat per day. Before applying the next coat, you will need to go over the stock with steel wool to prepare the surface for the next coat. I usually apply about 10 hand rubbed coats, then let it cure for about a month. Once it has thoroughly cured, you can rub it out with Hoppe's stock polish to give it a magnificient soft hand rubbed finish that will rival the stocks on the most expensive custom made guns. It is easy but requires that you do it correctly and take your time. Impatience has ruined a lot of stocks that could have been beautifully finished if the person had just taken his time.
I worked in a woodworking shop for years and my father is a master woodworker... Id suggest a good OIL based polyurethane. Get Minwax Oil based polyurethane and get a staining brush or if you can find the spray cans of oil based polyurethane even better.
You want at least 2 coats of the urethane.... 3 to be safe. Oil based so you wont have any problems if you are out with it in the rain. You can stain the stock too, for that youd also want to use an oil based wood stain. again Minwax is a good brand to buy. Good luck. Oh, and dont forget to sand after youve stained but before you start the urethaning... and then LIGHTLY (260 grit) sand each urethane coat after it dries.
I've used Formby's tung oil, G-B Lin-speed, and Tru-oil. I personally liked the tung oil finish best - hand rubbed probably 10 coats on it - not that glossy and certainly sealed.
I've heard that Pilkington is very good
http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowsePr鈥?/a>
tung oil ,its much better than anything else, clean it very good ,rub and buff between coats, with 0000 steel wool and a very soft rag or a cloth buffing wheel, i have put as many as 18 coats on a stock,it has great depth, and looks like it is covered in glass
Haven't worked with wood a lot but i have refinished a few rifles. I've had good results with minwax wipe on poly.
I have worked in wood for 30 years put a poly coat on it!

Will the clear coat on my newly painted car get shinnier as I buff it?
I just had my car painted, and the clear coat is REALLY uneven. Some spots are really nice, while other spots are blotchy, and dull. The guy who painted me car told me the more I buff it with a buffer and wax, the dullness will eventually become shinny. Is he right? I dint really trust him, because he has lied to me many times before. Will the clear coat on my newly painted car get shinnier as I buff it?
well
gloss comes from a smooth even surface
so, technically, with a buffer, you will be smoothing the surface down each time you use it
however, he shouldve wetsanded the car after he painted it.
if he didnt do that, which it sounds like he didnt
then i doubt its ever gonna be shinyWill the clear coat on my newly painted car get shinnier as I buff it?
If the paint is fresh, it is generally suggested that you wait a while, I am guessing that they did not use a UV light to cure it, I would not touch it for months in that case.
And the only way you might cure some of that unevenness is to use a cutting compound to actually removing some of it, wax only covers. Further, could it be possible that the clear coat was not mixed right in which case it might not work?
My question is, did a) your insurance company send you there b) are they part of a chain? If either, complain.
I'm a painter by trade and can see that your question has not been answered. The clear will not improve with anything you can do.It needs to be professionally water sanded smooth then buffed with rubbing compound. This is something we always do unless the car is not worth the trouble,it's a lot of hard work. This guy is hoping you will go away, sorry.
first wait at least few weeks for clear to cure. Here the most important step for a Professional look. Get some wet sand paper 1500 grit mix little dish soap with water and start sanding car in a strait motion action not in circles. Then use a variable speed buffer with a sponge pad with polishing compound. Start buffing until desired shine. Note do not use high speed to do this procedure it will damage paint. Start with low settings for best results
how many coats of clear did they put on? i used 3 coats on my vette and buffed it to get any over spray that dried to fast. there is a wrong way to apply clear coat,
was any hardener used in it? was it thinned to much? was it applied to heavy?what was the air temp and humidity?
if the base coat turned out ok dont despair you can cut the clear coat down and reapply a nice even clear again.
He lied to you. The clear coat should be as shiny as its going to get. He did a bad paint job. If you paid him to paint the car demand that he sand the clear coat down smooth and apply a good coating of clear coat.
get a soft sanding block and 2000 grit sand paper. Keep wet at all times and wet-sand the car in wide, even sweeping motions and it will become very shiny and glossy
Well if it is kind of spoty then buffing it may work but it will take a real good buffing just make sure you do not put swirl markis in it especialy if its new paint it is real soft
Newly Painted? NO!... It Will Wear On It. If Anything Try To Make The Car Evenly Blotchy And Dull Or Take It Back For A Better Job. Don't Buff.

When flatting a new paint job, how do I know if I'm sanding through the clear coat?
I spraypainted my fibreglass bumper with an acrylic clear coat and I'm about to flat it with 1500 wet sandpaper. When sanding it, how do I know when I'm sanding through the clear coat? Does the clear coat come off with 1500 sandpaper?
How hard should I be rubbing it?When flatting a new paint job, how do I know if I'm sanding through the clear coat?
if the cars not white and the dust coming off when sanding is white, then its just clear coat. when you start to see the cars color in the dust then you know that you went through the clear coat. clear coat is sort of thick, so just go till its flat. dont push really hard but at the same time dont just rest the sand paper on it and move it, sand it with a bit of pressure. When flatting a new paint job, how do I know if I'm sanding through the clear coat?

Just applied base coat of auto spray paint, small blemishes, need to clear coat, Do I sand
I finished the base coat yesterday, but there are little blemishes here and there, but I do not have enough paint to re-coat them.
Do I sand it and hope for the best or clear coat it now. If sanding, what type of grit?Just applied base coat of auto spray paint, small blemishes, need to clear coat, Do I sand
alright blemishes, you can wetsand with 1000 grit..
the whole surface
it should all be a uniform flat color
if that dosent take it out drop to wet 600 grit it all depends how thick you laid the paint on you obivously dont want to burn through it ';sand down to the primer';
and if you do .. go get some more paint, you will have to live with thoes blemishes after you put the clear on
you can add a little bit of dish soap to your water when wet sanding to help it glide a little better
after you lay on the clear you can wet sand with 1500 and or 2000 grit
and buff it out with rubbing compound
the main objective in sanding the whole thing is removing orange peel
';the smoother the surface the more shiny it will be';
you can always leave the improfections spray a buttload of coats of clear and wet sand it untill u cant see them anymore, but it just depends how big the improfections are

if you sand you will have to re-spray the entire panel and hope it matches.metallics hardly ever work right and remember if you sand be prepared to re-tape and re-prep the entire car or you will cause yourself even more headaches
no don't sand that will ruin it and just get the regular sand paper it will work fine I'm an artist

What is the difference between gelcoat and clear coat ?
what is the difference between gelcoat Cutting compound and clear coat cutting compound in terms of abrasivness.
is it safe to use T-Cut that is designed for gelcoat on a clear coat finish ?What is the difference between gelcoat and clear coat ?
A gel coat is colored (white or any color) resin that goes over the fiberglass to give a smooth finish. Clear coat is a clear spray finish that goes over paint to protect, give luster and depth, usually associated with car finishes. What is the difference between gelcoat and clear coat ?
Hello! Mark T. is right on with his answer. Some maunfacturers like Formula paint their hulls and to protect the paint they spray a clear coat. Mark T. would get my vote!
Gel coat has pigment in it, clear coat does not. Clear coat can go on fiberglass .
Mark t gets it right
I thought a gel coat was Fiberglas resin without the glass and a clear coat was like a varnish or polyurethane finish coat.

Hand wax my car or have the clear coat restored?
My car is brilliant black and it has some scratches in the clear coat.I'd like to know what my best alternative is. In case I take it to the dealership, will they have to do some body work or apply a new layer of paint? I'm guessing that they won't apply paint the same way they do at the factory. Thank you!Hand wax my car or have the clear coat restored?

most of the time, the finish in your paint can be restored very easily.depending on how bad the condition is,your paint can be hand waxed or polished out with a high speed buffer.repainting usually is unlikely unless the paint is cracking or deteriorating to the metal.find youself a good auto detailer in your area and make sure he is bonded, you can probably have your car done from 100.00 dollars to 200.00 dollars. good luckHand wax my car or have the clear coat restored?
Hand wax if the scratches are minor and can be seen from an angle. If it's more serious, bring it to a detail shop for a clay bar and machine buffering treatment. I assume the dealer will do one of these and just charge you more money.
You can wax it and most of the time that will hide any scratches unless they are threw the clearcoat. If you can find a teflon coating and have that applied that works great
Hey this is just an opinion, mind you , however ,Unless you ';Enjoy'; the workout you can get from wax-on waxoff ,
Your car's finish will last longer and with less ';Maintenance'; (resale value get the point) attention.
If your into that sort of thing anyway.
I say go with the redo of the clear coat ,but it is still up to you. (free will right ).
Via con Dios`
as long as it's the dealership you bought it from, they should be able to hook you up..
just hand wax it its so much cheaper and thats what your supossed to do any way to make the coat have a long life.
I would take it to a good detail shop. They can detail it for about $100 and make it look like new. Ask our friends and coworkers if they know of a good one.
Hand waxing should do the trick unless they are deep and through the clear coat. In my experience if you try to get it repainted or redone it just doesn't match the rest and you basicallly have to redo the whole paint job which is costly and annoying especially if like me your color is a paticualrly hard color to find but people keep dinging the doors *huff* that makes me mad.
both get the clear coat restored and you should have your car waxed at least once a monthmy myspace

I Just finished Painting My Car and i was wondering what do i do after i apply the Clear Coat?
i just finished painting my car and it was a decent job. So i was wondering what am i supposed to do after? Im pretty sure im supposed to buff it?I Just finished Painting My Car and i was wondering what do i do after i apply the Clear Coat?
if it has too much trash in it or if it has too much texture(dry looking, orange peel, or just not smooth enough for your liking) then you need to buff it. don't wait to long to do it as it gets harder with time. especially if you used a cheaper clear. also, you should know how much clear is on it, because it's not hard to sand through it. as others have answered, 2000 grit wet sandpaper is easier to buff out, but it takes more time and sand paper to get results. i recommend using 1000 on the roughest parts and then resand with 1500. it's not hard to buff out 1500 sand scratches. but remember this, sand paper and buffing compound and polish and buffing and polishing pads are expensive, so if it looks good now, leave it alone.I Just finished Painting My Car and i was wondering what do i do after i apply the Clear Coat?
have a good look at it. wet rub if it needs it, or just giv it a good cut{buff}
Let if cure before you wet sand it with 2000 paper (or buff it).
You should wet sand it with 2000 grit and then buff it. The sanding will take the ';orange peel'; look off the car and buffing it brings the shine.

Can I put a clear coat over an exsisting gel coat?
I have a cajun bass boat and I think it has a gel coat on it, cause I just got through sanding it down. It is a metal flake ';paint'; and therefore I assume it is a gel coat. I didn't take it all the way down to the bare fiberglass. Can I re-coat it with a clear coat? Can I put a clear coat over an exsisting gel coat?
Yes. But make sure that it is cleaned with a prep solvent. Use a good urethane or epoxy clear coat. Happy Boating! Can I put a clear coat over an exsisting gel coat?
yes you can ...
the metalic flakes are in the gelcoat.. so just recoat it with clear coat. you may have to do it again in a few years as most clear coats are not formulated for marine use...
Note: metallic flakes absorb the heat of the sun, therefore damaging the finish. Looks Pretty!!! will not last a lifetime.
