Repairing the clear coat on a car?

I have a spot on my car where the clear coat appears to have come off. The paint is still intact and there is no rusting or scratches. My guy friends say that waxing the car will fix this. Is this correct?Repairing the clear coat on a car?
nope not at all actually, it might make it shiner for awhile because of the silicons in the wax but really every time you wax your car it takes a thin layer of paint off, that's how it gets shiny again, by removing dull dead paint.. to properly repair the clear coat you need to sand the panel down with at least 500 grit sand paper (remove all the shine or the new clear will just peal up) and re-clear the panel. if you want a good repair i wouldn't use a rattle can clear.. the repair will be noticeable and probably have adhesion problems.. Good Luck with your car!Repairing the clear coat on a car?
Wax wont make the paint come back, it may just look better. I would imagine the best way is to get some clear coat spray from an autopart store. I think they come in an aerosol can now. Then take a car buffer to it to smooth out the paint once it's dry.
no wax won't work i would buy low grit wet sand sanding paper like 320 grit wet sand by dipping paper in water keeping it wet sand down edges of clear coat of spot then you can buy a clear coat in spray bomb can coat spot were sanded maybe maskin out side of spot with masking tape and paper to limanate over spray
Steve was right until he got to the aerosol can thing - i paint cars for a living and no, you cannot wax the car to fix the problem,

your paint has 2 steps or layers, a base coat which is the color you see and a clear coat that protects the base and gives it a glossy look

automotive clear coats have a hardner or catylist in that paint that gives the paint strength - an aerosol can has none of that and will make the car look worse, plus most cans have lacquer in them which will react with the base coat and cause it to wrinkle

The only solution is to paint the panel , both with base coat and clear which will cost 600-700 per panel - or to just ignore it - the base will start to turn white and fade pretty rapidly without clear to protect it

waxing will do absolutely nothing but take the whitish fading away for a week or so - but without the clear the base will continue to fade and eventually rub off as it is applied very thin

sorry for he bad news - but at least you know
